William Hardie (Archbishop of the West Indies)

The Most Rev William George Hardie, CBE[1] (1878 – 21 February 1950) was a long serving Anglican Bishop of Jamaica from 1931 until 1949; and for the last four of that time Primate of the West Indies.

He was born in 1878 and educated at Giggleswick School [2] and Emmanuel College, Cambridge and ordained in 1902.[3][4] His first posts were curacies at Holy Trinity, Cambridge[5] and then Christ Church, Greenwich[6]. Later he held incumbencies at Holy Trinity, Swansea[7], St John’s, Lowestoft[8] and St Luke’s, Finchley[9]. In 1928 he was appointed Assistant Bishop[10] of Jamaica[11] before promotion to be its Diocesan three years later[12]. He died on 21 February 1950.
